| BMI
stands for Body Mass Index. This is a ratio between
a person's weight in kilograms divided by height
in meters squared. This is a standard formula used
to determine a patient's health risk. A BMI of greater
than 40 (or 35 with other health issues related
to obesity) is a necessary criteria for bariatric
surgery. |

Meet the Faculty
UCLA is the home of one of the most technologically
advanced operating rooms in the world. Not only can patients
be confident that they are entering a weight reduction program
that suits their needs, but they can be assured that their
surgery is performed by an experienced surgeon using the latest
advances in medicine.
The surgeons operating at UCLA are committed to excellence
and performing surgery that will ultimately result in the
best outcomes for patients. Surgeons use the newest and most
innovative techniques and equipment and are highly skilled
in bariatric procedures. Each surgery is initially approached
with the intent of being performed laparoscopically. Laparoscopic
surgery requires only very small half-inch incisions instead
of eight to ten inch incisions. Patients heal and recover
much more quickly when the procedures are performed laparoscopically.
